Primary skills (class abilities) are based on a player's archetype.[2] Players can personalize their primary skills with augmentation from a secondary archetype (secondary class).[2][3]

  • Augments to primary skills will fundamentally change the way the ability works - adapting what the ability once did to incorporate the identity of the secondary class.[4]
  • Choosing the same primary and secondary archetype increases focus on that archetype.[6]
  • Each skill in the primary tree has a minimum of four augment choices from the secondary tree.[7]
  • Players receive skill points as they level. These can be used to level up skills within their skill tree.[8]
    • It will not be possible to max all skills in a skill tree.[8]
  • In terms of skill progression, players can choose to go "wide" and get a number of different abilities, or go "deep" into a few specific abilities.[9]
  • Changing the augmentations on your skills will require you to go to a NPC in a Village node or higher.[10]
  • Active skills could look totally different after an augment gets applied.[11]

You only get active skills from your primary class and that active skill could look totally different after an augment gets applied. It really depends on what the augment is.[11]Steven Sharif

Key for the augment system is that these augments are meant to demonstrate a core identity of the secondary class type you've chosen. So if from the eight archetypes whatever you choose as your secondary, you're going to receive a choice of augments that relate to some core ideal of that class. You know like a tank is about controlling the battlefield, is about surviving. The mage is about dealing damage and elements and ability in AoEs. The rogue is going to be about stealth and critical damage. So those augments are going to to play towards those identities.[12]Steven Sharif

The idea behind the system is that you're kind of skirting the line through these augmentations of your role, right. We have the traditional holy trinity that's present in class designs for MMOs and it's often that those either are not deviated at all or completely deviated from entirely. The augment is to kind of offer a balance between that where you still maintain the semblance of that trinity system while offering the opportunity to customize your play experience towards one of the other angles in the triangle.[13]Steven Sharif

Active skills

Players can build their characters with the active skills they want.[14]

  • Players are not given skills as they level up, they must choose what skills they take.[9]
  • The number of skills on the action bar will be contained (fewer than 30).[15]
  • For example: One Fighter will be different from another based on what active skills they have chosen.[15]
  • Through skill choice, players can customize their combat experience to focus on tab targeted skills, action targeted skills, or a mix of both.[16]
  • There is no spellbook requiring memorization.[17]

Combat abilities

The aspiration for combat is for abilities to have corresponding counter-play abilities.[18]

Crowd control

Crowd control (CC/mezzing) abilities include root, snare, stun, sleep and slow.[19][18]

Diminishing returns in regards to crowd control and conditions like stun and sleep and slows and that kind of thing: Yes we will have absolutely diminishing returns. I think it's a necessary component to balance out classes that have high control ability.[18]Steven Sharif

Mobility

Very few abilities will require a player to remain stationary during combat.[34] Prone and crouch will likely not be in the game.[35]

Combat targeting

Tab targeting during the Alpha-0 Timeless protector boss fight in the Dünheim dungeon.[58]

Hybrid combat refers to the choice between tab targeted skills, action targeted skills, or a mix of both in the Ashes of Creation MMORPG.[16] This is achieved through choice of skills/abilities.[60][21]

  • A tab-targeted ability requires a target in order to utilize that skill.[61]
  • An action skill is anything that can be utilized through placement of the player, such as a reticle, a ground template or a directional placement.[61]
  • It may not be possible to be able to fully spec into just action or tab targeted skills. There might be a 75% cap on choosing skills from any one type.[21]

Skill progressions, skill point allocation is determined by the player. The player will be able to choose either more tab-target oriented skills or more action-based skills and customize their playable experience to what accommodates their preference. From a balancing standpoint for us developers, we need to make sure that certain abilities house certain functions so that there's a balance between skill shots and tab-target abilities.[21]Steven Sharif

Action oriented and tab oriented versions of skills will have different characteristics. Variables will change based on which version is chosen.[62]

As an example: Let's say you're playing a ranged class. You could have an action-oriented power shot in your skill tree or you could have a single target power shot that ramps up and does more damage. [62]Steven Sharif

Hybrid combat is scheduled for testing in Alpha-1.[60]

For the purposes of balance, certain skill types will be either tab or action oriented skills. For example:[63]

  • Hard Crowd control (CC)s may be housed in action oriented skills because they are skill shots that are more difficult to land.[63][21]
  • Softer CC's would be housed in tab-targeted abilities.[63]

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse combat targeting

Action combat in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse utilizes a targeting reticle.[102]

  • A hot key can be used to toggle reticle mode on and off.[102]
  • Left mouse click is used for basic weapon attacks.[103]
  • Right mouse click is used as a "focus" button. It can also be used to activate root motion attacks for melee.[103]
  • Combat targeting uses hitbox registration in three separate regions: Upper body, lower body and head.[104]
  • Certain weapons and skills have ADS (Aim Down Sights) functionality.[105][106]

There will be aim down sights. You may have seen it that you can aim down sights on weapons; and there will be scopes on like crossbows and stuff that - arcane scopes - that you can use.[105]Steven Sharif

Some spells do have ADS. There's a long-range meteor blast that can be used from one of the spell books; and that has an arcane zoom in. It lets you zoom into a target.[106]Steven Sharif

Alpha-1 will test hybrid action/tab combat.[60][107]

Headshot mechanics

Headshot mechanics will be implemented in האירבה רפא based on testing.[108]

  • If headshots are implemented, they will be along the lines of a higher critical chance.[108]

The idea behind headshot in the MMORPG is that, if we do implement headshots - part of this testing is to determine if we will - but if we were to implement headshots it will be along the lines of a higher critical chance. So basically hitting a skillshot on the head will increase significantly the opportunity for that damage to be critical. Will they one-shot? Absolutely not.[108]Steven Sharif

Headshots in action combat are equivalent to a critical hit in tab targeted combat.[109]

  • Players relying on tab skills will have a fixed critical hit chance every time they use an ability or weapon.[109]
  • Players using action-based skills are going to rely on getting a head shot or hitting a critical spot on the opponent.[109]

So if you take a look at like kind of what a head shot represents: A head shot is basically a critical hit; and players who are relying on tab skills will have that critical hit chance baked into their character. They will have that fixed chance every time they use an ability or use a spell or swing a weapon; and then somebody who is kind of preferring you know action based, in order to get that crit, they're not gonna be relying necessarily on their stats they're gonna be relying on whether they get a headshot or not, or are able to hit that critical spot on that character. So that's kind of the direction that we're going in that way. Again, it's gonna be hybridized so there's gonna be a little bit of both happening in both places.[109]Jeffrey Bard

Siege abilities

Eight players of the same primary archetype can band together to create monumental effects during a siege.[110]

These are the types of systems that we want to put in place where groups of a single primary archetype can come together to summon these types of effects that play off of what the identity of that archetype is.[110]Steven Sharif

Summoner

Summoners can collaborate to summon larger summons, such as Golems.[111]

  • A siege summon will have an incremental size based on the number of summoners participating in that summon activity, with a maximum of eight.[112]
  • The number of summoners participating in the summon will determine its overall size.[112]
  • All summoners must be in the same party and the party leader must be a summoner.[113]
    • The party leader initiates the summon and then takes control of it.
    • Once summoned, the party leader cannot be changed.
    • If the party disbands, the summon ends. There will be a grace period to handle disconnects.
    • The party may also contain non-Summoners.

It doesn't have to be just summoners, but it has to be a party led by a summoner with other summoners in it.[113]Steven Sharif

Tank

If eight Tank archetypes each use one of their summon wall abilities it might construct a larger wall that can divide two raids in a moment; and would require damage and block skills and abilities for a momentary lapse of battle between those two raids.[110]Steven Sharif

Class progression

As a player progresses with their primary archetype (primary class), they will have the opportunity to choose a secondary archetype to augment their primary skills with effects from their secondary archetype (secondary class).[2] The combination of primary and secondary archetypes is referred to as a Class.[115][116]

If a Fighter were to choose Mage as a secondary archetype, the fighter would become a Spellsword. This combination opens up augments that can be applied to skills in their primary skill tree. Fighters have a Rush skill that allows them to rush towards a target; and upon reaching the target, deal an amount damage with a chance to knock the target down. A Mage's escape augment could be applied to the rush skill, which would now teleport the player to the target; thus eliminating the charge time on the skill.[2]

Each skill in the primary tree will have several augment options from the secondary tree. This is an example of horizontal progression.[2]

Skills by archetype

Bard skills

Bards have engaging combat abilities, not just buffs.[117]

  • Bards will have a wide range of abilities to choose from, such as wordsmithing, acting, and musical aspects.[118]
  • Bards will not be the "downtime" class. This is the role of social spaces within nodes.[117]
  • Bards will have utility outside of combat, like all other classes.[119]

In other games, Bards tend to be a relatively passive kind of way of playing and that's really not the direction that we want to go with it. We want every class to be fun to play. We want every class to be viable. We want you to feel like you are doing something: That your moment-to-moment gameplay is fun; so a lot of that kind of stuff is going to be based on combos, on reactive interactions between your party members and the mob that you're fighting, or the player character that you're fighting. There's going to be a lot of movement from the front lines to the back lines to kind of help out and make sure that everybody is supported in the way that they're doing it; and that you are also being active in what you're doing. You're not just sitting in the back passively playing a lute and not having any fun.[120]Jeffrey Bard

Bard buffs are related to how they perform in combat.[121]

  • If a bard lands a skill shot against a target, allies within a certain range will be granted a temporary buff that relates to the skill that the bard used.[121]

Let's say the Bard is using a weapon, has a sword out and... does some gladiatorial looking performance attack and it looks so great. It inspires his friends around him to increase their multiplier on critical damage, and now they deal additional damage against targets for the next 10 seconds or 8 seconds. So, you're going to need to be active. You're going to worry about your position, the relation of the position of your party members to you in order to accentuate really what you offer the party.[121]Steven Sharif

Cleric skills

Clerics have control over life and this may relate to utility abilities that relate to corruption.[122]

Divine form divine form icon.png If your focus is at 80%, use this skill to increase heals and damage of your skills by 25% for 8 seconds. Applies an AoE heal over time to friends and damage over time to enemies.[100] Pulse AoE heal and damage around the caster.[124] Reduces hate for the caster on enemies hit by the pulse. Enemies targeting the caster lose target.[124] Increases effectiveness of all heals while cast in this form.[124]
Endow life endow life icon.png Resurrect target if they are dead. Prevents death if they are alive. Resurrected players don't return to life at 100% health and mana values.[93] Increases duration of death prevention buff.[93] Resurrects target to 100% hit points and mana points.[93]
Life bolt Deal damage to enemy based on the casters missing health.[97] Adds an area of effect.[97] Slows enemies hit by the blast.[97]
Life's balance lifes balance icon.png Balance the life percentages of all party members to the average percentage of health.[100][125] Reduced cooldown.[125] Adds a heal over time on everyone.[125]
Lifeline lifeline icon.png Chain heal to friendly targets.[126] Add damage to enemy in range of final group member healed.[126] Heal and damage increases based on the number of allies that will be hit by the ability. Stacks up to four of five times.[126]
Mana pool (passive) Increased mana pool.[127] Further increased to mana pool.[127] Every Nth cast is free.[127]
Mana well Gain X mana per pulse. X must be either percentage based or based on weapon damage.[128] Bonus health per pulse.[128] Allies in the well get a physical and magical defensive buff.[128]
Medium armor (passive) Increases armor given by medium armor.[129] Further increases armor given by medium armor.[129] If medium armor worn in all slots gives a balance of health and mana less than the health given.[129]
Proximity chain stun Chains enemies to a center point. If enemies leave proximity of the point the chain breaks and they are stunned. Chain is only applied when the ability is cast.[27] Enemies that are chained take extra damage from all incoming sources.[27] Allies in range when chain is cast gain extra health from heals.[27]
Righteous blessing righteous blessing icon.png Deliver a spot heal.[98] Adds heal over time.[98] Adds damage over time to adjacent enemies.[98]
Soul paralysis Channel a lock down of a single target. Both you and the enemy are held in place.[31] Increased resistances to being disabled.[31] Caster takes reduced damage while channeling.[31]
Staff combo staff combo icon.png Target an enemy and use your staff to strike with multiple blows. Dealing damage and powering up your focus with this weapon attack.[100] - -

Fighter skills

The Fighter archetype will include maneuverability and "closing the gap" mechanics to enable the fighter to quickly traverse distances on the battlefield.[130]

What we want the Fighter warrior to do is to be able to cut through enemy lines, get to the support area of a raid perhaps and take out healers with some quick DPS burst damage. We want them to be masters of different weapons. We want them to be able to be versatile in whether or not they want to be a ranged fighter or melee one. Cloth armor (passive) Increases armor given by cloth armor.[134] Further increases armor given by cloth armor.[134] Bonus mana for each piece of cloth armor.[134]
Elemental (passive) Increases to elemental damage. The more the mage changes their element type the more damage is done.[135] - -
Forcefield forcefield icon.png Eats mana based on flight height and duration. Mitigates incoming damage by eating mana at a high consumption. Has mixed utility and defensive application.[136] - -
Ice prison ice prison icon.png Target an enemy and summon a prison of ice around them, paralyzing them.[22][23] Adds damage over time.[23] Snares after root breaks.[23]
Ice sheet ice sheet icon.png Creates an area where enemies are knocked down.[56] Snares two targets in area.[56] Increases size and duration.[56]
Implosion implosion icon.png Launch a powerful burst of fire (fireball) against a single target.[22][95] Becomes a burn (damage over time).[95][22] Area of effect around the target.[95]
Mage's detection mages detection icon.png Reveal secret passages and magically hidden terrain around you. Casts light and reveals magical explosive hazards.[137][22] - -

Jump jump icon.png Dash with cooldown.[26] Cooldown is replaced by charges with individual cooldown.[26] Drops a bear trap at the location the ranger dashed from.[26]

Light armor (passive) Increases armor given by light armor.[142] Further increases armor given by light armor.[142] Each piece of light armor increases damage.[142]
Marked arrow marked arrow icon.png Target an enemy to use this skill, causing that enemy to take additional physical damage.[29][30] Enemy takes additional magical damage.[30] Increases the duration of this debuff.[30]
Power shot power shot icon.png Use this skill to charge up a shot that fires forward in a line, damaging all enemies it touches.[29][83] Chance to cause bleed damage over time.[29][83] Splits into a fan of arrows in a cone. Radius increases based on hold duration.[83]
Ranged passive Reduces minimum range of all abilities.[143] Increases max range of all abilities.[143] Increases crit chance. This effect has a cooldown.[143]
Slice slice icon.png Cone melee attack.[85] Becomes a 360° melee attack.[85] Adds hemorrhage (bleed) damage.[85]

Rogue skills

All classes are capable adventurers, but rogues excel at delving the deepest dungeons and finding the most hidden of treasures.[144]

Summoner skills

The summoner uses many abilities that channel through their summon. The summoner is essentially playing through their summon.[111]

  • Abilities from the summon appear on the summoner's hotbar.[111]
  • Summoner has control over their summon.[111]
  • Summoners will likely not be able to fuse with their summons (eidolons).[146]
  • Summons can be leveled through the application of skill points to their active skill.[13]

You gain your summons from your summoner class as an active skill and then skills can be further developed with points.[13]Steven Sharif

Summoners summon different summons, depending on the class they choose.[147]

  • Animals.[147]
  • Spirits.[147][148]
  • Zombies, skeletons and other undead creatures.[148]
  • Corpses (potentially).[147]
  • Some summoners may summon multiple things.[147]
  • Other summoners may only summon one powerful thing.[147]
  • Certain summoners may only be able to summon effects and/or temporary energies.[147]

For example: If your summon had a sweeping attack with a claw, or had the ability to bite an opponent, or rush an opponent; and you took teleportation, you could rush them similar to how I've given an example with the tank: Teleporting to a target instead. Or, its claws could combust on impact on a target dealing some burn damage that persists. Or... let's say your summon traditionally was some type of bear or bear cat, you could apply an elemental augment and now it could be a transparent flaming bioluminescent cat; and its damage would be fire based. So, that's how we want to influence the active skills with how augments apply; and that's how it would apply with Summoners.[149]Steven Sharif

Tank skills

Tanks will not be forced to have a shield but it will definitely be a viable option.[150]Jeffrey Bard

Bulwark (Tank ability) bulwark icon.png Summon a wall in front or behind the tank. Enemies are knocked down if they contact the wall.[24][54] Adds damage to the knockdown.[54] Tank is able to place the wall anywhere on the battlefield within a certain distance.[54]
Charge Charge to a single target on the battlefield (friend or enemy) and do damage to enemy targets upon reaching them.[55] Additional physical and magical mitigation upon reaching the target for a short duration.[55] Does damage and knocks down enemies between caster and target.[55]
Cover cover icon.png Target a friendly player, to absorb 50% of their incoming damage for 6 seconds.[24][92] Increases damage that's redirected.[92] Gives the target damage reduction buff for the duration. The damage reduction applies to both the tank and the ally.[92]
Crowd control break Breaks non-animated knockdown crowd control effects (such as root, snare and stun).[19] Increases resistances to crowd control effects.[19] Gain focus for each CC effect that is cleared through this use.[19]
Hatred hatred icon.png Single target that adds hate.[94] Add a forced target lock.[94] Add hate over time per tick.[94]
